This is the Forum of Insectnet. The Porch Light is one of the Topics of open discussion. Open to just about anything. There have been threads for just about anything. From Being Sexually Assulted, to our current POTUS, Big Foot, religion, Waffle House, Politics, Ugly Women, Wives and the list can go on and on.
As many of you know, I am politically incorrect, a Republican, a Christain, an ardent Lepidopterist who has never really matured to an adult. I am older than most of you, I have been married to the same woman longer than most of you have been alive. I am retired and I almost forgot to mention, I have a tendency to speak my own mind. I am considered a male chauvinist, which is true. However, I respect women for who and what they are.
To say the least, I am opinionated.
So here we go. Our President, Donald J. Trump believes we need a Wall on our southern border to prevent people from other nations from just walking into our country illegally. The Democrats are opposed to The Wall. However, they have not presented an alternative to The Wall or anyvmethod to prevent illegal immigrants from entering our Country, the United State of America🇺🇸.
What is your opinion of The Wall. Why are you for it, or, why are you against it? What are the alternatives to The Wall.
For those of you who are Friends of mine on Facebook, you already know my opinion. Let us hear yours.

Well as I've said before, I don't hate immigrants. Many of us are descendants of immigrants. Rather than build a wall lets kick out all immigrants and descendants of immigrants. That will leave the native americans and the space aliens like Leroy.

If you build a wall, people will come to the US by the sea. As you must know, there are hundred thousands of migrants from Africa and Middle East who reach Europe everyyear : they cross the Mediterranean.

I certainly understand the mentality that one should defend their borders. From a purely practical perspective, I've read/heard that the wall will be prohibitively expensive (5 billion is just a down payment) and that much of the land that will be required is currently privately owned, and getting that land will take a number of years. Moreover, I'm not even sure a wall will prevent illegal immigration to the extent advertised. I mean, we have these things called ladders......and you know, people can climb stuff.

Leroy,
I've been a registered republican for most of my life. I live in a republican state (in fact my next door neighbor was my congressman until he completely moved to the Beltway). And of course, my family immigrated here a few generations ago.
With that background, I think most of Trumps policies, including the wall, are ignorant - if not actually stupid. I'm not so religious, but if I were I'd wonder about the hypocrisy that is Trump. Has the man ever had a moral thought? Does he ever worry about the well being of others? If you think the wall is about protecting your job from some menial laborer, then maybe you should quit busing tables... - the wall is about re-electing a morally corrupt president.
Sadly, the thinking man's republican party is dead. More and more, R's vote the party line - not for what is best for the country. Other than a few friends I have is state and local government, I voted D this time around. I'm not saying that D's don't vote the part line as well - they do. But at the moment, they seem to live is a less black and white world, and can see at least a few of the shades of gray that represent reality...

For me, it's all a matter of economics. (My world is a lot more black and white than John's.) If our laws were actually enforced (including punishing US companies which hire illegals!), the incentive to illegally enter the country would decrease greatly, and a physical barrier ought not be necessary. But since we choose to not enforce our laws, I don't know... a barrier of some sort might well be cheaper than trying to enforce laws on the gigantic backlog of illegals we already have.
As far as I can tell, there's very little difference between the two big political parties. They sound different, but when in office, they end up doing the same sort of things. I'm tending to vote Libertarian more and more these days (even though the Libertarian's views of a lot of subjects goes against my grain). I just dunno - I may soon stop voting entirely - it seems a waste of time, given the long-term results we get no matter who wins. jh

I have never said, nor have I heard any in Washington D.C., the Wall was to keep them out. It is meant to keep them from entering our Country illegally.
How do you control them from just walking in. I am a descendant of immigrants. I am English & German.
My great grandparents (On my father side) were all Machinists. My great grandparents (On my mother's side) were English. Some of them fought in the civil war. They worked in the Steel Mills. They all entered the country legally.
The current situation is completely different. The current are fleeing their countries do to political turmoil. They are for the most part uneducated, have no skills, an unknown medical history and they are desperate.
We should welcome them when the come to our ports of entry.
The Wall is a necessary evil, like it or not. However, let them come legally. The Wall will do that.
All we have heard of those that oppose is No Wall. How do we control those entering our Country?
And one last thing. A new Congress Woman is sworn in and the first words out of her mouth, Impeach the Mother F**ker. With that attitude, nothing will ever get accomplished in Washington.

One last question: what happens if Trump gets re-elected in 2020?
And, if Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg seat becomes open. Then what.
Now that I have stirred the pot enough! Time for a nap.

And tunnels to a lesser extent. It would be terrible if one spent billions of dollars to make a border wall and the other spent 20$ at the hardware store to buy a ladder. So trump should also make sure to negotiate with Mexico to make ladders illegal!

These folks are being lied to about what waits for them in America. They've been promised the moon as in free this and free that. They simply want to just walk right in and be treated like a US citizen when they are not. There are people who come here and gain citizenship the right way and it's a process. What gives some the right to bypass the others that are doing it the correct way? There should be no cutting to the front of the line. Laws are what level the field for everyone.

I find it amusing that many people/politicians in the US will chant "we are the best country in the world." Perhaps stop saying that if you don't want everyone else in the world wanting to come over to have a piece of the best pie?

That is a excellent point. And I also think the US needs to keep its nose out of everyone's business. It doesn't need to be the police of the world.

Most of the time that's the case but we will also cozy up with a country that's close to someone we don't like so they will let us park our missiles there.

Well, I watched the madness that was Trumps "address" and all it seemed to me was scapegoating, fearmongering, and a massive temper tantrum. To be honest, it doesn't surprise me one bit, and makes me think less of him as someone "honest". Just his diatribe on how said was was going to stop the cartels from smuggling drugs made me laugh. Last I checked, most of the cartels have more money than he does, and even if the bs wall was built, they will find a way to smuggle it in. As long as there are tweakers and crackheads, and rich cokeheads, they will find a way to bring it in, and get their money.
