And why the hell all that fuss about the wall funding ? A shut down and so on ! Isn't it Mexico who will pay for it as Trump said several times when he wanted to be elected ? It seems the American taxpayer will pay for a useless wall. As said earlier in that topic, if you want to stop illegal immigration and drug traffic, enforce the law. I am not a pro-illegal immigration, but a wall is a costly joke.

My understanding is that most illegal immigration is from overstaying temporary visas, not the border.

What I say here is my opinion, as are all the rest of the comments before. Will a wall along our southern border stop illegal immigration? Much depends on the design of the wall itself. The height, thickness, structural integrity, and location are factors that determine effectiveness. Even if it keeps out a good number of illegals, there will be a few that make it in. It is a noble idea to protect our borders, but there needs to be some effective way of doing it. If our government would stop giving immigrants everything that we Americans must work for, (and pay taxes to supply illegals with). Free food, housing, education, health care, and other incentives should be halted, then perhaps the idea of entering the US would not be so attractive. Saying that certain places are s##t##le, countries is crude, but true. Why else would these people want to come here so badly?

Screw the wall, a quick missile strike on the homes of Latino unlicensed pharmacy wholesalers followed by a mass excursion and clean up in northern Mexico and arrests of government politicians in DF would be less expensive and effective far longer. No wall no border. The militia can take care of the border which is now bilaterally open to insect collectors and armed carry on both sides of the former border is recognized as a right. Problem solved.
Homeland Security can then be retasked to hunt down and eliminate ms13, crips, and all the other ###bags. If they can’t or won’t do it we ask the Michigan Militia To do it. Invite the Mafia to come back and clean up urban areas, it a lot less expensive to let them take a few truckloads of TVs than continue driving urban poverty and crime.
Legalize drugs.

Why do you think that those at "the top" do so little to stop the multi billion dollar drug industry, it's not rocket science, they are all in it together, all creaming in the profits, sure they will make all the right noises but in the end they are too greedy to stop the gravy train, Sodom and Gomorrah had nothing on the modern world. Who suffers? Politicians? Royalty? Finance giants?Captains of industry? No the weakest, poorest and most vulnerable in society, always have always will.

One last question: what happens if Trump gets re-elected in 2020? My wife and I have discussed this at length – primarily about moving. Financially, we could retire now – and we have talked at length about joining some hippy-dippy expat community overseas. Perhaps someplace tropical but not too hot, with good culture, good food, great leps and so on. You see the appeal. We both love Latin America – and with our modest wealth, we could actually have a small positive economic impact in a community that would appreciate it. But I actually like the good old USofA. And I love my job (I have things planned that could take a decade to mature – and I’d love to see these through towards the end). So, the thought of leaving would be hard. And despite our problems in the US, our level of corruption is nothing compared to most countries to our south. And things you take for granted – like affordable electricity that runs 24 hours a day, are hard to give up. Like water you can drink. Geeze – I like milk – something that can be risky to drink regularly in many countries. And most beer in Latin America just sucks… . (seems like I’m fixated on hydration – no?). These day to day hassles in a developing country would make every day an adventure – right? That’s great for a while but could wear you down eventually. But the US seems to be headed down a path of social intolerance – on this forum for example, you see people calling democrats names all the time. You see regular bitch’n and moaning about liberals. These are the symptom of a changing society. I don’t want to live in an intolerant society where others force their system of belief onto me. Where neofascism may be in our future. Where every such fool that wants one, carries a gun. Where people fly confederate flags in their yards. I want the freedom to live my life as I see fit without intimidation. I want that to be true for everyone in the US. And I’ll note again that I’ve been a registered republican most of my life – but I feel that intimidation because the core philosophy that drew me in has been converted into a negative energy – you are either with us – or against us. And right now – I’m against most of the things I see with R-dom. That’s where Latin America has a great deal of appeal. There seems to be a lot more tolerance of different viewpoints. People can disagree – but they talk about their disagreements – not shout each other down. By and large, people try and be nice to each other. You can play checkers or chess with a stranger in the park without fear of politics ruining your day. So – there’s a little town in Panama – David – that is high on my list if we continue down our current path. Or Lake Atitlan in Guatemala (although the expats here are real hippies – not yuppy hippy – so more intolerance than you might expect towards people who have held a job at some point in their lives – but the Maya are beautifully wonderful). And you are forced via peer pressure into yoga… So that’s where we are in all this discussion about the next election. We’ve already liquidated some real-estate in preparation for something. We just don’t know what…. John

For as long as I can remember, I have never seen so much division in regards to the political climate as now, and it does not seem to be getting any better. I am even hearing rumors and suggestions of civil war. I certainly hope this will not come true, because a war due to mere differences of opinion is just wrong. I do believe that a responsible citizen has the right to defend against immediate threat, whatever that might involve, but to show so much adversity towards one another just because they see things differently is taking things too far, and a real bad sign of what might be coming in the future! There must be some common ground that both sides can respectfully achieve. Wall or no wall, lets sit down and really discuss a logical solution to the problem of illegal immigration. If a wall would at least slow down the illegal influx, then perhaps it will be worth it in the long run. If there is evidence that it would be ineffective, then scrap the entire project. Ask the border patrol what they think would be the best idea since they are at the location of all of this conflict. Try to solve the problem logically, sensibly, and without all the animosity.

If there will be a civil war I'll watch it from Texas and eat popcorn. Just kidding, I am a frequent traveller to the US (several times a year). The things I observed in the last 6 years were longer lines at the immigration and tougher questions. But this probably had more to do with the fact that I switched from science to being self-employed.
The other thing is the increasing numbers of meth and heroin addicts among homeless. Hawaii is a pure mess with all these addicts.
Other than that I didn't see any change, but as I said I mostly stayed around Texas and never went to Washington.
The wall itself in full length is nonsense. I know most of the border east of Arizona and it just doesn't make much sense.
I also don't think people are coming to leach off of social systems in the US (you don't get much), but they simply join because of higher salaries and good job opportunities in construction or landscaping that pay well.
Enforcing existing laws would be more than enough. I do understand that the US wants to change from being an immigration country to a non-immigration country to stabilise the social ties in society, but I would hope they still keep the immigration for excellent people going. Being attractive to scholars from all over the world is what has made the US one of the best countries in the world (in my opinion still the best).

President Trump made many promises during his campaign for President. He set out from his first day in office deliver on those campaign promises.
The Democrats and the News Media have done their very best to oppose and discredit him. I am delighted that he is fixing the trade deals that have taken advantage of USA. Especially with China.
After the mid-term election, it became very evident to me that the 2020 elections will be different. Unless Trump does something really stupid, he wins re-election in a landslide.
On a rather sad note, a newly elected Senator blurted out a shameful, " We will Impeach the M****r F****r. What kind of language is that, a total lack of professionalism. She comes into office looking for a fight. With these attitudes, they are not looking to solve any problems.
On the other hand, Trump is a big mouth and speaks his mind. I think he delights pissing off the Democrats. A total lack of professionalism as well. He is also very stubborn.
And then there is Trump's Sex life. The Republicans learned that lesson the hard way during Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky. Numerous Republicans extramarital affairs became public during that time. Many had to resign there office.
I have always believed that if you are elected to office and you use your position for Hanky Panky and get caught, castration should be the penalty.
I can only wish.
How about Public Castrations......

The eruptions come from the fact that in Europe and the USA the politically correct liberals have got used to having things their own way and they can't stand it when someone has the guts to stand up to them, I'm not saying I like the Donald or always agree with him but he must be doing something right to upset that lunatic shower of do gooding s##t.

I have kept "politics" (and bigfoot) allowed in the Porch Light, as it is in the DNA of InsectNet forum. But please behave Insults are forbidden and please respect the other side. Don't forget that our community is made from different political views and I want no one to feel insulted while visiting InsectNet forum. So you can explain why you like one camp and dislike another one, but please avoid insults. PS : I find that your sentence is a nonsense. I don't like Hillary, it doesn't mean that Trump is great. For me, the US deserve much better than both of them.

I never said that he was great, just that he had ruffled the feathers of those who have had their own way for far too long, that's the way that I see it, if someone has a different opinion I'm fine with that, it's just plain speaking on my part remember I'm old enough to remember the world before political correctness and it was a much better place to live as far as I'm concerned. And as far as my last statement goes it anyone can think of a better description of Tinseltown then I'd love to hear it. Seems to me that any censorship on here is reserved for me alone when others say far worse and nothing is said.

The Wall and Shutdown are just theatrics from Rump; The media scrambles to catch him on another lie(and it's easy!), and his base could care less what lies he's caught in today, rinse, repeat each day. He just says whatever, nothing he does say can be believed, and he'll probably say the exact opposite just a short time into the future.
It's basically impossible to consume mainstream media in the US and not be propagandized. The facts are that the majority of both illegal immigrants and illegal drugs are not coming over the area to be walled off anyway, and wherever these do enter the country, they are filling a demand. Rich americans like tRump love using illegal labor to depress wages, and we americans also very much like our illegal drugs; despite what you may have heard, there is a great demand and thriving black market regardless of what the laws may be. No amount of crackdown is ever gonna stop this, so the question becomes, "What kind of society do you want to live in"? Do you want roadside contraband checkpoints and militarized police kicking in doors? Because we have that now, and they'll kill your dog in your house in front of your kids if it so much as barks at 'em. Try pulling up your falling pants and maybe they'll shoot you dead too.
When your leaders start demanding E-verify rather than a wall, you'll know they are trying to actually stop them. When they start punishing people who hire, rather than BEING the people who hire, illegals(yup, talking about President Cheeto von tweeto here) that'd be a sign they're actually truthful. What Trump wants is a great big monument to right-wing idealism, a giant symbol that he can slap his name on figuratively if not in actual gold letters. He'd also like you to stay distracted as much as possible, so he fires off a few tweets each day and contradicts whenever possible to keep the slow ones tied up.
I don't see a landslide victory for Trump in 2020. Only 1 real reason he won in 2016, and he won't be running against her this time. If the corrupt Dems can keep their hands off the primary this time around that is. He IS the establishment this time, he didn't upset the applecart but rather he wheeled it onto Wall St and started handing out all the apples. I thought there should have been public hangings after 2008, instead Obama made buddies and then Donnie small-hands took all those Wall St. criminals and put them in his cabinet.
I should also add, you can pay taxes IN on a fake SS #, but you can't get a tax return back. You can't draw food stamps, and you can't receive Welfare. You can't get medicare or medicaid. You can go to the emergency room and still get healthcare, but the rest of those are just lies they tell to manipulate you. I would not support any politician who lies thusly, nor consume any news source that does same. I mostly get my news from Youtube, as pretty much all mainstream sources have been proven to be liars. Our President himself is a proven liar. Not sure why anyone would proudly support that, unless they bought his lies! Please this isn't the place to point out Obama said you could keep your doctor, that was actually a Republican change- likely made strictly for the purposes of propaganda. I am a bit disappointed in some of you, this forum is supposed to be for smart people!

All thoughts aside, I still want to see the wall being built! Every day China is growing bigger and better! What better way to top China then to top the Great Wall? Also China makes roughly 60billion dollars out of tourism partly due to the Great Wall (that is mostly gone because it didn’t work so they used the bricks to build homes)! So just imagine... trump gets 6billion to build a wall and tourists from all over the world will come... then there will also be many more tourism related job openings! Just imagine. But then again we must consider that traveling to the US is much more complex and expensive than Mexico, so I would not be surprised if the Mexican tourism increased as a result of the trump wall! Regardless, if they build the wall... i will want to go scratch my name with a rock on it (: before they make it a world heritage site! And maybe if trump is nice he will let us moth collectors drape a large light sheet on one side and put a large MV bulb at the to! Hopefully he builds the wall as high as possible, that way the MV light get a greater distance.
